Fujiki Hideaki

Studying artistic characters, their role in society and the cultural significance of motion pictures from a theoretical and historical standpoint. Associate Professor Fujiki is currently researching and analyzing how images of movie stars were crafted and transformed when new media (such as photos and magazines) were popularized in 1910s through 1930s in Japan, and how it impacted ordinary people's lives and the political issues involving culture. Associate Professor Fujiki provides graduate school students with a general knowledge of classical film theory (including the theories of Eisenstein, Arnheim and Bazin) as well as modern film theory (including theories of Metz and Barthes, neo-formalism, gender theory, post-colonial thought and modernity theory). He also helps them understand film history, film history methodology and methods of criticizing and analyzing films systematically as well as critically so that their efforts will result in unique research. In addition to pursuing research in areas of specialization, he also places emphasis on fostering trans-field perspectives, incisive analysis and sophisticated writing.
