Researching history of ethnic minorities in southwest China, especially the Bai of Dali in Yunnan Province. Main research themes include: formation process and regime structure of Nanzhao Kingdom and Dali Kingdom; history of the relationship between these kingdoms and surrounding countries; and the formation of ethnic groups and relationship between such groups during the Dali through Yuan/Ming Dynasties. Associate Professor Hayashi studied under Professor Lin Chaomin at the Chinese Nationalities' History Department of Yunnan University, China, from 1992 to 1995, and became the first non-Chinese national to be awarded a Doctoral degree in the History of Chinese Nationalities. This department was founded by the late Professor Fang Guoyu, one of the originators of the study of ethnic history in Yunnan. Associate Professor Hayashi emphasizes the methodology of critiquing traditional materials for the study of Oriental history. He strives to foster a student's skills and ability to research from a compound viewpoint, as opposed to research that is heavily slanted toward the logic of the dominator (dominant ethnic group.)
