Currently studying creation and the development process of "Nisee," a style of portrait unique to the Kamakura Period, utilizing actual Nisee pieces and related data. Associate Professor Ito's goal is to consistently systematize his theory. His second study emphasis is researching the significance of art objects of the Sanuki Kotohira-gu Shrine from the standpoint of collection history. A broad range of people, from commoners to feudal lords, worshipped at the shrine during the Edo period.
In both of his research and educational efforts, Associate Professor Ito's emphasis is to understand the sensibilities of Japanese people in the pre-modern era through a thorough examination of art objects. Students are required to first understand historical facts, but Associate Professor Ito also expects them to expand their study beyond such historical aspects and attain their own sense of purpose.
