Professor Ph.D. (Literature)

Born in 1947. Bachelor's Degree from Nagoya University, School of Letters (1970); Master's Degree from Nagoya University, Graduate School of Letters (1972, German Literature); Participation in Doctoral Program at Nagoya University, Graduate School of Letters (1974, German Literature); Assistant at Nagoya University (1974); Research fellow with DAAD in Germany (1974-1975); Instructor at Tohoku University (1977); Assistant Professor at Tohoku University (1979); Assistant Professor at Gifu University (1982); Assistant Professor (1989) and Professor (1997) at Nagoya University
Professor Shimizu approaches major works of Bildungsroman and Kurzgechichte (short stories) focusing on the works of Goethe and Schiller, aiming to interpret them with a unique method that combines empirical and internal explication. Currently he engages in the comparative study of enlightenment rationalism, classicism, romantic irrationalism and terrorism by placing emphasis on Kleist, Grillparzer and Hebbel.
The independence of each graduate student is respected in research and he provides them with indirect support. However, he will be strict in the acquisition of basic skills such as language ability.
