Sugiyama Hiroyuki

Born in 1948. Bachelor's Degree from Nagoya University School of Letters (1971, Chinese Literature); Master's Degree from Nagoya University Graduate School of Letters (1974, Chinese Literature); Completion of Doctoral Program at Nagoya University Graduate School of Letters (1977, Chinese Literature); Instructor (1980); Assistant Professor (1991), and Professor (1997) at Nagoya University School of Letters; Professor at Nagoya University Graduate School of Letters (2000)

Professor Sugiyama started his research in literary thought in Ming and Quing Dynasties, but currently his research focus is on the study of Japanese medical thought which was significantly influenced by the two dynasties, from the angle of reception and acculturation of Chinese culture. His research also approaches literature by deciphering expressions and Professor Sugiyama takes this approach to decipher Chinese historical literature. Graduate students are expected to review, not only in Chinese literature, but also a wide variety of materials written in classic Chinese (or contemporary Chinese). At the same time, the students should keep in mind that they are required to be capable of accurate reading comprehension and the course should offer a place for their training.
